The two worlds of automotive and communications are converging.
Manufacturers like GM and Ford, and computing companies like Google and Uber, are transforming the plain old automobile into a driverless on-demand transportation-as-a-service device.
At the same time, the networking and communications ecosystem is positioning to transform the networks that will ultimately connect, manage and deliver services to new types of vehicles – on the ground and in the air.
Autonomy is a great innovation. Communication with surrounding infrastructure – people, things, streets, other road users – this is what innovators in networking/communications/computing are working to unleash on the transportation sector.
The opportunity is so broad, and the solutions required so deep, that a new industry category is required: V2X – Vehicle-to-Everything.ITS doesn’t accurately reflect the innovation in the network and in direct communication to other vehicles. Connected Vehicle doesn’t adequately capture the infrastructure requirements and real-time awareness to surrounding infrastructure that will fulfill on the promise of the next generation driverless vehicles.
V2X technology allows vehicles to communicate with each other, things, infrastructure, and vulnerable road users, making driving safer and more efficient for everyone. By turning the invisible visible, V2X warns the driver of road hazards, helping reduce traffic injuries and fatalities. V2X optimizes traffic flow, reduces traffic congestion, and lessens the environmental impact of transportation.
V2X requires next generation communications and connectivity. That means antennas, sensors, high-bandwidth links and networks that manage mobility. V2X requires edge computing, datacenters and the optical fiber links that have changed the way nodes on the network utilize software.
V2X requires cloud computing, antennas capable of sharing data with many nodes both inside and outside the vehicle, sensors that create a safer and more informed driving experience and rugged, high-speed, in-vehicle data networks that are vital to achieving the seamless, connected, feature-rich automotive future consumers are demanding.
V2X Americas covers all these components of the new transportation infrastructure. This is a fresh, new, infrastructure-first event developed by wireless infrastructure veterans who participated in the 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G mobile network. V2X Americas is all about underlying digital infrastructure – where sensors communicate with vehicles; vehicles communicate with the surrounding environment and each other; where the devices connect directly and also through a network.
We look beyond connected cars and self-driving vehicles to world in which vehicles are rolling data centers, gathering vast amounts of data in real-time, analyzing, integrating and sharing with an array of third-party applications and cloud service providers. As Panasonic’s Chris Armstrong says, “The potential to turn every vehicle into a sensor is a massive data opportunity.”
Executives from automotive, transportation, wireless, mobility, networking, cloud computing and government know that disruption is coming. We hope you’ll join us in Santa Clara in September 2019 to get ready for it.
